47% will pay no federal income tax

An increasing number of households end up owing nothing in major federal taxes, but the situation may not be sustainable over the long run.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Most people think they pay too much to Uncle Sam, but for some people it simply is not true.

In 2009, roughly 47% of households, or 71 million, will not owe any federal income tax, according to estimates by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

Some in that group will even get additional money from the government because they qualify for refundable tax breaks.

The ranks of those whose major federal tax burdens net out at zero -- or less -- is on the rise. The center's original 2009 estimate was 38%. That was before enactment in February of the $787 billion economic recovery package, which included a host of new or expanded tax breaks.

The issue doesn't get a lot of attention even as lawmakers debate how to pay for policy initiatives like health reform, whether to extend the Bush tax cuts and how to reduce the deficit.

The vast majority of households making up to $30,000 fall into the category, as do nearly half of all households making between $30,000 and $40,000.

As you move up the income scale the percentages drop.

Looks like lord savior Obama actually is taking care of his voters, with our money.

More Honoring of China?

Empire State Building turns red-yellow for China's 60th
(AFP) – 21 hours ago

NEW YORK — New York's iconic Empire State Building will light up red and yellow Wednesday in honor of the 60th anniversary of communist China.

The Chinese consul, Peng Keyu, and other officials will take part in the lighting ceremony which will bathe the skyscraper in the colors of the People's Republic until Thursday, Empire State Building representatives said in a statement.

The upper sections of the building are regularly illuminated to mark special occasions, ranging from all blue to mark "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra's death in 1998 to green for the annual Saint Patrick's Day.

Just last week the tower turned bright red.

However, that was not to mark some other communist achievement, but the 70th anniversary of the film "The Wizard of Oz" in which Dorothy wears ruby slippers rather than the silver of the original L. Frank Baum novel.

As everyone knows, China is a terrible human rights violator. Let's just hope this one is fake, like the Chinese flag flying at the white house story was.

Longer School Years

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090927/ap_on_re_us/us_more_school

Many schools are broke. That's why they needed stimulus money. How could they possibly stay open longer without a lot more tax money?

R-tarded idea.

Obama and Duncan say kids in the United States need more school because kids in other nations have more school.

"Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here," Duncan told the AP. "I want to just level the playing field."

While it is true that kids in many other countries have more school days, it's not true they all spend more time in school.

Kids in the U.S. spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the U.S. on math and science tests — Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the U.S. (180 days).

Obama and allies in a corner

Barack Obama called Iran's activity "a direct challenge" to the international community.

The accusations were made public in an extraordinary joint statement by the US President, flanked by Gordon Brown and the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy before the start of the G20 economic summit in Pittsburgh.

The new revelation sharply raises the stakes at a time when Israel has been signalling that military strikes against Iran are on the table.

"The Iranian government must now demonstrate through deeds its peaceful intentions or be held accountable to international standards and international law," Mr Obama said. His French and British peers portrayed even deeper indignation. "The level of deception by the Iranian government and the scale of what we believe is a breach of international commitments, will shock and anger the whole international community and it will harden our resolve," Mr Brown said, adding that it was time to "draw a line in the sand". He went on: "This is the third time they have been caught red-handed, not telling the truth."
--------------------------

So here you have it Barack...

You are hoping that Russia and China support new and extreme sanctions on Iran

You are hoping the British and French stay strong and support these sanctions

You are hoping the Israeli's don't attack

....

If Russia and China don't step in you will have two options:

1) Attack (or allow Israel to attack, though you JUST chastised Israel this week and told them you DID NOT support them)

2) Issue a strongly worded letter via Hans Blix

How timely that you have spent the month pissing off your allies just when you need their support the most.

China is thoroughly pissed after you started a trade war.

You just submitted to Russia's will and dismantled the missile shield.

and now you want to ask for their support??

let's not forget that you are also asking China to buy the majority of our debt (aka spending, aka stimulus, aka bailouts, aka would-be-health-care)

Well there you go Barack, welcome to big-boy leadership... whatcha gonna do?

50 Year Old Cartoon

"When anybody preaches disunity, tries to pit one of us against the other through class warfare, race hatred or religious intolerance, you know that person seeks to rob us of our freedom and destroy our very lives."

Obama says Iran is breaking rules

Oh no!!! They broke the RULES!

The Obama should be very firm with Iran.

Or else!

Or else we will be very very angry with them
and we'll write them a letter telling you how angry we are!

Bad Iran! You've been a naughty boy!

"Iran's decision to build yet another nuclear facility without notifying the IAEA represents a direct challenge to the basic compact at the center of the non-proliferation regime," Obama said, with Brown and Sarkozy standing at his side. Video Watch world leaders react to Iran »

"The size and configuration of this facility is inconsistent with a peaceful program," Obama said.

Obama said the three countries presented "detailed evidence" to the IAEA on Thursday that showed Iran "has been building a covert uranium enrichment facility near Qom for several years."

They demanded an immediate investigation into the facility and threatened a stiff response if Iran fails to conform to international obligations regarding nuclear development.

RNC chair Michael Steele chastises Obama indoctrination video

"I'm so outraged and stunned by its content...see the indoctrination of our nation's greatest treasure -- our children. In the video, impressionable youngsters at a public school in New Jersey, most of whom are no more than six or seven years old, have been instructed to sing the praises of 'Barack Hussein Obama.' One song is even set to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. This is the type of propaganda you would see in Stalin's Russia or Kim Jong Il's North Korea. I never thought the day would come when I'd see it here in America."

Is this going too far? Decide for yourself.

Radical on the Right

This guy's letter struck me a lot. I hear this point of view quite often from conservative friends of mine. Conservatives of the meat-eating, gun-toting, military-serving type, too.

Republicans now having lost power have become radical: they accuse a mostly centrist president of being a socialist; they wish failure on the president of the United States at a time of extreme foreign and domestic crisis. Some insinuate rebellion if they can't "take their country back," and no mainstream Republican voices outrage at the hint of insurrection. They screamed about a speech that mostly articulated conservative bromides ("take responsibility for yourself," "work hard," "do not rely on excuses").

Link.

Between the Rhetoric and the Reality

“I hear almost daily from men and women who voted enthusiastically for Mr. Obama but are feeling disappointed. They feel that the banks made out like bandits in the bailouts, and that the health care initiative could become a boondoggle. Their biggest worry is that Mr. Obama is soft, that he is unwilling or incapable of fighting hard enough to counter the forces responsible for the sorry state the country is in.”

Yeah, no shit. With additional reporting by N. S. Sherlock.

Walter Mondale.... yep, its racism.

Mondale: Carter's right about race, Obama

Is criticism of Obama racist? Mondale: 'Yeah'Minnesota Independent

Mondale: Racial 'edge' to Obama foes Politico

Asked at an event in Washington late Wednesday whether he agreed with the former president that racism was behind some criticism of Obama, Mondale took a long pause before answering: “Yeah.”

I don't like saying it. Having lived through those years, when civil rights was such a bitter issue, and when we argued those things for years ... I know that some of that must still be around.

I don't want to pick a person, say, he's a racist, but I do think the way they're piling on Obama, the harshness, you kind of feel it. I think I see an edge in them that's a little bit different and a little harsher than I've seen in other times.

Obama gets praise ... from the Axis of Evil

Wow... its been a good week for Obama, look! Everyone loves him!
... school children.

Pisses of our allies though:

Once again, America leads by example

Who watches most television?

DESPITE an increase in entertainment choices, watching television remains as popular as ever, according to data from the OECD's Communications Outlook report. American households watch the box for over eight hours a day on average, twice as long as anyone else. Viewing has fallen in some countries. Turks reportedly watched an hour's less television per day in 2007 than they did only two years earlier, when the country was America's nearest rival as couch-potato king.

Just to be clear, I blame Bush for this too, as I clearly did in "LOLOLObama luvs himself" opinion piece from yesterday.

Allies what?

Allies what?

In just the past month Obama continues to turn his back

Fidel Castro praises Obama...

A little credit where it is due

Ok, ok, let me say a few positive things about Obama

  • On global warming... he basically told EU to go to hell. The EU is trying to get the US to use a 1990 baseline for carbon emissions. Obama (and Bush) knew that this is bs because we should be using the 2005 baseline since the US vastly improved emissions during that time. So why doesn't the EU accept this? Well because in 1990 they were a lot better than the US and in 2005 that gap had closed and they are using that as leverage to hammer the US in the successor to Kyoto in Copenhagen.
  • In Obama's address to the UN he makes a case for America not being the worlds police and not being solely responsible for solving the worlds problems. To quote: "Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world's problems alone."
The rest of the speech was crap and embarrassing, but I couldn't agree more with this line.

Cult of Personality - Part deux

The song quotes directly from the spiritual "Jesus Loves the Little Children," though Jesus' name is replaced with Obama's: "He said red, yellow, black or white/All are equal in his sight. Barack Hussein Obama."

Among other lyrics, touting a fair-pay bill Obama signed in January: "He said we must be clear today/Equal work means equal pay."

Making up songs to praise the President?

And you wonder why parents kept their
kids at home during his address to schools.
Indoctrination...
thank you failing public school system.

Song 1:
Mm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that all must lend a hand
To make this country strong again
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said we must be fair today
Equal work means equal pay
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that we must take a stand
To make sure everyone gets a chance
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said red, yellow, black or white
All are equal in his sight
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

Yes!
Mmm, mmm, mm
Barack Hussein Obama

Song 2:
Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!
For all your great accomplishments, we all doth say "hooray!"

Hooray, Mr. President! You're number one!
The first black American to lead this great nation!

Hooray, Mr. President we honor your great plans
To make this country's economy number one again!

Hooray Mr. President, we're really proud of you!
And we stand for all Americans under the great Red, White, and Blue!

So continue ---- Mr. President we know you'll do the trick
So here's a hearty hip-hooray ----

Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!

The Cult of Personality

Instead of adoring his own image, Obama loves to hear himself talk – about himself. In just 41 speeches so far this year, not including this week's big speech at the United Nations, Obama has talked about himself nearly 1,200 times – 1,198 to be exact. (That breaks down to 1,121 “I”s and just 77 “me”s.) And that just includes 34 weekly addresses and his seven major speeches. Count the hundreds of other public speeches and he’d be off the charts.

And if you needed any more confirmation, there was this past Sunday’s Obama-palooza on the network talking head shows. Obama pulled a presidential first, going back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back on five different networks. He hit “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on ABC, “Meet the Press” on NBC, “Face the Nation” on CBS, as well as interviews on both CNN and Univision.

The interviews went off as expected. Obama kept his “I” on the nation’s problems. He mustered 387 personal mentions in just 82 minutes of air time. Forget the economy, health care, racism or whatever. Every 13 seconds, Obama was talking about … Obama. Next stop, David Letterman on Sept. 21. You already know the topic.

That’s to be expected for a TV hound like Barack Obama. Martha Joynt Kumar, a political science professor at Towson University in Maryland, said Obama has had nearly three times the number of interviews either Bush or Bill Clinton had at this time in his presidency. The New York Times Caucus blog reported: “As of his seven-month in office mark in August, he had done 114 interviews, compared to 37 by former President George W. Bush and 41 by former president Bill Clinton.”

At this rate, he’ll top all presidents combined by the time he and his ego leave office.

It’s so bad, it’s either humorous or pathetic. Let’s try humorous first. Obama loves himself so much that …

· When he goes to the optometrist, he uses an “I” chart. Bada bing.
· When he got his new iPhone, he thought it was named after him. (If GE made it, the phone might have been named after Obama, after all.)

Racist Car Poolers!

Arlington: Race a Factor in HOT Lanes

ARLINGTON, Va. - There's a new turn in the debate over high occupancy toll lanes or HOT lanes.

A lawsuit filed by Arlington County last month claims the lanes benefit wealthy white people and discriminates against minorities. While the only rule to get in the HOV lanes on Interstate 395 is you must have three people in the car, Arlington claims adding HOT lanes would cut out poor and minorities by defacto.

That claim doesn't sit well with Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity (R-Springfield).

"I don't think race or class warfare has any standing in this argument," Herrity said.

Buried in the lawsuit filed last month, county attorneys argued the HOT lanes, "encourage and enable a financially-able, privileged class of suburban and rural, primarily Caucasian residents from Stafford and Spotsylvania counties operating single occupancy vehicles ("SOV") unimpeded access on toll lanes."

In other words, it benefits wealthy white people.

A few pages later, the suit claims the Federal Highway Administration and the Virginia Department of Transportation failed to do the proper environmental analysis and that "their actions also constituted civil rights violations as they discriminated against minority and low income communities."

Arlington County Chair Barbara Favola says the race issue only arose because the environmental review includes socioeconomic impact.

"It is not our intention to play a race card. I think that's a very divisive approach," Favola told FOX5.

Before filing the lawsuit, she says, the board never actually discussed race as a factor and that air quality has always been the chief issue.
"We were concerned about everybody being affected by the project. We thought congestion was not going to be significantly reduced," Favola said.

Instead, the board believed the HOT lanes could increase traffic, making pollution even worse.

The discrimination claim may be shaky ground for Arlington. The latest U.S. Census numbers show Arlington's population is 80 percent white as of 2008 with a median household income in 2007 of $92,345. The percentage of whites was higher than Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford or Spotsylvania Counties, which are along the HOT lane corridor. Arlington was also wealthier than all but Fairfax County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Supporters of HOT lanes say people focus too much on the tolls and forget the project also includes money to study bus rapid transit (BRT) and additional park and ride lots.

"Clearly minority and low income people could benefit because it provides an opportunity for car pooling and mass transit," Herrity said.

Even with HOT lanes, high-occupancy vehicles still drive free.

Before the lawsuit was filed, VDOT put the I-395/I-95 HOT lanes on hold because of financial difficulties and concerns in the community. But transportation officials have always said that's only temporary.

If you're so broke that you can't pay a little toll, then why don't you use public transportation or at least carpool?

Lower pollution, raise tax revenue, relieve traffic congestion.... Hmmmm... SOUNDS LIKE A TERRIBLE RACIST IDEA!

Net Neutrality

Just to remind us that corporate shills aren't strictly the domain of the democratic party...

GOP senators declare war on Net neutrality

“I am deeply concerned by the direction the FCC appears to be heading,” Sen. Hutchison said in a statement. “Even during a severe downturn, America has experienced robust investment and innovation in network performance and online content and applications. For that innovation to continue, we must tread lightly when it comes to new regulations."

Soo... Premptively banning regulation that presumably bans regulation will... Allow for innovation? I'm not following, KB.

Big Ralph

Ralph Nader on Obama: 'Weak. Waffling, wavering, ambiguous'...

What's your take on Obama so far?
Weak. Waffling, wavering, ambiguous and overwhelmingly concessionary.

Is any of this enough to get you back into the political arena yourself?
It's too early to say. One thing is I always want the progressive agenda represented on the ballot, even in a rigged two-party tyranny. I wish other people would do it, but as far as me, it's too early to say.

Do you think third parties have a shot in the next elections?
Sure. They'll be called the Bloomberg Party. Some billionaire will come in like Perot and turn it into a three-way race. There's so many billionaires, and a few of them are quite enlightened. You don't need a right wing billionaire because they've already got the Republican Party.

The Seperation of Journalism and State

Quit your whining!

"I think it's important for the media, you know - not to do any media-bashing here - to recognize that right now, in this 24-hour news cycle, the easiest way to get on CNN is or Fox or any of the other stations, MSNBC is to say something rude and outrageous," Obama said on CNN's Sept. 20 "State of the Union." "If you're civil and polite and you're sensible and you don't exaggerate the-bad things about your opponent and you know, you might get on one of the Sunday shows. But you're not going to be on the loop. And, you know, part of what I'd like to see is all of us reward decency and civility in our political discourse."

I think, that frankly, the media encourages some of the outliers in behavior, because, let's face it - the easiest way to get on television right now is to be really rude," Obama said on ABC's Sept. 20 "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "If you're just being sensible and giving people the benefit of the doubt and you're making your arguments, you don't, you don't get time on the nightly news."

The Commander-in-Chief urged those in Washington to "disagree without being disagreeable" and thus falling victim to the 24-hour news cycle.

-------------------------------

Did the President just lecture the media on 'rudeness'?? Really?! That is what he is concerned with? He has this air of elitism surrounding him that causes him to be totally ambivalent to the fact that people actually disagree with him. He dismisses every ounce of opposition as 'rude' or 'silly' or 'extreme'. Then when the majority of people disagree with him he blames the media (THE MEDIA!) for perpetuating it.

Then he has the audacity to propose giving federal money to the newspaper industry.

OBAMA OPEN TO NEWSPAPER BAILOUT BILL...

Really? Is this Venezuela? We've already been been asked to 'flag' the opposition, now the president is publicly chastising the cable media while proposing to bail out print media??

"Newspaper Revitalization Act," - would give outlets tax deals if they were to restructure as 501(c)(3) corporations (non-profits)

"I'll be happy to look at them"- Obama

We all know about the separation of Church and State, but the Separation of Journalism and State is by far clearer and holier to Americans.

Unbelievable people!

From Chairman Barack: "I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding,"

Read as: I'm concerned with free speech and freedom of the press because they are turning against me.

Bailouts to the banks, the auto industry and insurance industry have all come with government controlled stipulations. Imagine tying the funding to the newspaper industry to the Journalism Czar!! Appointed by The President?!
