The Romulans should be worried

Cloaking Device Developed at Duke

"The new device can cloak a much wider spectrum of waves—nearly limitless—and will scale far more easily to infrared and visible light. The approach we used should help us expand and improve our abilities to cloak different types of waves," senior researcher David R. Smith said in a statement.

  1. Very cool. I remember when the initial research about this was coming out a year or two ago. There's some amazing shit happening here.

  2. What a coincidence, I just last night watched the first encounter between Earth and Romulan vessels since the Earth-Romulan War of the 22nd century (TOS: "Balance of Terror"). The Enterprise discovered that Romulans looked like Vulcans and had advanced cloaking devices. Awesome episode.

  3. I do remember seeing on one of those "science of star trek" shows that physicists are working on matter-to-energy conversion, and I think it may even have been achieved with a single atom or something. But the REAL roadblock to replicators and transporters (even more so than energy) is memory. The amount of memory to remember where every single atom in a human body belongs to re-assemble it would take like an entire planet covered in harddrives.
