I was reading more about this. This is pretty ridonkulous. I don't understand how basically a streetgang on a small skiff can overpower an oil-tanker. OK, I get it that the element of surprise may have worked the first time, but why isn't every vessel carrying valuable cargo through the Gulf of Aden now armed? Put a few grenade launchers and automatic weapons on the bow and stern of these things, hire some lookouts and go on your merry way. No matter how well-armed the pirates are, it seems the boats they're overtaking would all allow for a higher position from which to defend themselves.
From what I've read most pirates are after the ships safe which usually contains lots of cash for payroll. Sometimes they hold the crew for ransom, sometimes they steal the tanker (not sure how that is possible, wouldn't Google see where the ship went?)
But usually the pirates are after booty and dirty pirate hookers.
They could just hire Nevada Jay and his small arsenal to defend the ship. Hell, I bet Jay would go for free just for the chance to make use of his Mosins. He might even let one or two try to board, so he can try out his DE .50.
Somali pirates seize ninth vessel in 12 days...
ReplyDeleteSomali pirates transform villages into boomtowns...
This has been going on for years.
ReplyDeleteYes, but now they are demanding bailouts.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could embed the sound of a rimshot in this inferior posting format.

Pirates will infest Gulf if US quits Iraq too soon
ReplyDeleteShit does that mean we have to start the war of Pirates? It would be just like the war on Terror except with eye-patches and swash-buckling.
